ICTS Research Development Program (RDP) - NIH Mock Study Section
The ICTS Mock Study Section (MSS) is a platform for ICTS members to get feedback on K, R, and F series NIH proposals. The proposals are discussed on a designated date emulating a NIH study section panel. Subsequently, the investigators obtain formal NIH scores and detailed written feedback from the grant review session prior to the corresponding NIH grant submission date.
Requirements are:
ICTS membership registration (click here to register as an ICTS member - Register now ) Submission of a letter of intent using this form. Submission of all components of the NIH proposal for review by the corresponding due date and prior to the NIH submission deadline. The proposal must not be undergoing grant review by the NIH prior to the MSS session. Type of proposal reviewed:
Clinical or translational research K, R, F series awards (if your federal grant proposal falls under a different mechanism, please email us to discuss eligibility). Preclinical research K awards (currently, preclinical non-K awards are not being reviewed) submitted by Physician-Scientists (MD, MD/PhD, DO, etc). Reviewed in collaboration with the Division of Physician-Scientists, for questions contact Jacqui Hawkins (jahawkin@wustl.edu). Note: Research studies that include in vitro or bench research with animal or patient samples are not considered translational unless the proposed work includes a direct research plan towards clinical application. Clinical Research Translational Research Preclinical Research NIH definitions of clinical, translational and preclinical research:
Clinical research: Research involving human subjects, including studies involving direct patient interaction aiming to understand disease, develop therapies, test interventions, or develop new technologies. This includes patient-oriented research, epidemiologic, behavioral, outcomes, and health services research but excludes purely in vitro studies using human tissues not linked to a living individual. Translational research: Research that bridges discoveries from laboratory or preclinical settings to human applications and further, from clinical studies into improved community health and practices. It includes both moving laboratory findings to clinical trials and translating clinical trial findings into real-world health improvements. Pre-clinical research: Research conducted before trials in humans, typically using cells or animal models, human or animal tissues to assess the safety, efficacy, and biological mechanisms of new drugs or treatments. The ICTS Mock Study Section adopts the NIH definition of clinical and translational science (CTS) research that includes (1) Patient-oriented research , (2) Epidemiologic and behavioral studies and (3) Outcomes research and health services research. Patient-oriented research is research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator (or colleague) directly interacts with human subjects. This area of research includes: 1) mechanisms of human disease; 2) therapeutic interventions; 3) clinical trials; and 4) the development of new technologies. In vitro studies that utilize human tissues but do not deal directly with patients is excluded from this definition. At the current time, pre-clinical research, connecting the basic science of disease with human medicine, is not reviewed by the ICTS NIH MSS.
